LUTHER LANE, banker, West Canaan, was born in Vermont July 20, 1810. In 1817, he emigrated to Ohio and settled near Milford, Union County. In 1833, he came to Canaan Township and has since made this his place of residence. He commenced life for himself by working by the month. He has devoted his life to farming and trading, at which he has been very successful, at one time owning 1,500 acres of land. He now has about 530. As a trader he was indefatigable in the prosecution of his business, having, at one time ridden horseback constantly for seven years. He has been called to the various offices of the township during his life, including Justice of the Peace, Land Appraiser and Trustee. He and wife are members of the Baptist church, in which he has been very useful as a Deacon and Superintendent of the Sabbath school. He was married in 1832 ot Elizabeth Morrison, daughter of Henry and Martha (Davis) Morrison. By this union eleven children were born, viz., margaret, wife of Israel N. Worthington; two that died in infancy; Dellilah, wife of M. Worthington; Martha, deceased; Pearl, deceased, and Luther, Jr., who married Josie Keys. In politics, Mr. Lane is a Republican. He has always been a prominent citizen for a number of years, having been largely identified with the mercantile interests of the township. During life he has given away nearly $100,000, and has quite as much left for himself. He has retired from the more active duties of life and is now connected with the Exchange Bank of Plain City in the capacity of President.
