From HISTORY OF MADISON COUNTY
W. H. Beers [Chicago, 1883]

Page 1053

JESSE SHEPHERD, deceased, son of Andrew Shepherd, deceased, whose biography appears in this work, was born March 15, 1844, and died September 6, 1881; previous tohis death he suffered for one year with that dreadful disease, consumption. He was raised on a farm, and attended the public schools of the county, in which he obtained about the usual education of a farm boy. He married Eva McCann, whose father was born in West Virginia, February 4, 1852, and emigrated to Ohio in 1854, settling in Madison County. By this union two children were born, a son and a daughter. At the time of his death, Mr. Shepherd owned 142 acres of land; he was a Democrat in politics, but never took more than an ordinary interest in political issues; he was a steady, industrious man, and left many friends to mourn his loss.
